Überblick
Animal Welfare Volunteer Experience (AWE), Malawi was established in 2016 by a dedicated group of residents who were concerned about the state of animal welfare in the country. They are the only animal welfare organization with a national mandate. Therefore this volunteer experience in animal welfare Africa is the right one for those who want to learn more about this topic and have practical experience with it. The focus is both on domestic pets and wildlife. There is a wide variety of programs throughout the community, providing animal quarantine and vaccination, veterinary care and educating the public (especially school children) about the benefits of animal welfare on both people and animals, so volunteering in outreach is extremely important to the project. The project is a wonderful veterinary volunteer opportunity, especially if you are a veterinary student, intern or you are just interested in getting to know how it all works in treating the wildlife and domestic animals.
AWE, offers an exceptional volunteer opportunity to contribute to the animal welfare organization. It delivers veterinary services and animal welfare education in communities of Malawi. The project values each single volunteer – be it by veterinary skills or other qualities- and the project leaders pull both together – learning from the international volunteers and help in achieving the project goals.
Why volunteer for this project?
This volunteer project receives no government funding and depends on overseas funding, volunteer participation and the generosity of the residents. Thus it is essential in helping to ensure the animal welfare project has the people – also volunteers, skills and resources to continue improving the lives of people and animals in Malawi. This might be a life changing experience for volunteers to think how do we, humans, treat the animals, how can we educate the people to treat them better. It will for sure leave you with the big thoughts and when coming home having a blast feeling that you have done something important for the animal lives, how such international volunteering can bring the difference in our common relation to the animals. This might not be only your volunteer adventure in Africa but can be also a perfect guide into your potential veterinary career.[/vc_column_text][vc_row_inner content_placement=”middle” css=”.vc_custom_1507284335031{margin-top: 50px !important;margin-bottom: 50px !important;background-color: #157a7c !important;border-radius: 10px !important;}” el_id=”project-cta-blue-color-white”][vc_column_inner][vc_column_text]

Standort
Lilongwe is a small city and therefore it’s not difficult to move around. There are two town centres, the Old Town with the markets, craft markets, shops, post office and the newer City Centre, with the Parliament House. City Centre is the location of many of the embassy buildings, banks, five-star hotels, and aid agency headquarters. Generally, the distance from the residential areas to Old Town or City Centre is too great to walk. However, AWE volunteer project has a vehicle and a driver and they can fit your travel needs into the schedule. In addition, local transport is cheap with mini buses and push bike taxis costing around 300 Kwacha (MK) and taxis costing anything from 1500MK to around 2000MK per journey. You can also find a second hand mountain bikes or cars for sale on the Lilongwe Chat.[/vc_column_text][vc_gmaps link=”#E-8_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” size=””][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section i_icon_fontawesome=”fa fa-question” add_icon=”true” title=”Über” tab_id=”about5bd8-7518″][vc_column_text]

Animal Welfare Volunteer Experience (AWE) offers a quite some variety of programs and therefore exceptional volunteer opportunities – be it for the local community, providing veterinary services and educating the public are available. Among others the AWE team is active in the school children education where volunteers will be helping delivering lessons in schools and communities to educate about the animal welfare. Especially in the school time it all begins with the awareness and accompanies the obtained knowledge throughout ones life. It is all about the benefits of animal welfare for both: people and animals.
This volunteer experience offers and delivers veterinary services, as well as animal welfare education in communities of Malawi. Besides the outreach program, volunteers will also have the opportunity to spend 1 day in a week in the Spay and neuter clinic in a local community, and see the operations and first aid treatment of dogs and cats. One day weekly volunteers in Mzuzu will have a livestock day. There you will help to the stuff and seeing how they are providing veterinary treatment to farm animals and volunteers will help in raising the awareness of the animal welfare. It’s absolutely amazing having such an incredible volunteer experience and helping in the most needed animal care and veterinary activities.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section i_icon_fontawesome=”fa fa-compass” add_icon=”true” title=”Orientierung” tab_id=”orientation5bd8-7518″][vc_column_text]
Orientierung
After volunteer arrival, there will be a first day to rest and settle. After that a member of a the staff or even someone from the volunteers will give you an orientation and explain the whole program. Usually clinics and school lessons are scheduled on the same day each week, but the team is always on call too, so there are often unplanned activities or emergencies. There might be picking up confiscated puppies or kittens, inspecting or picking up abused animals, treating, spaying and neutering pets that are brought to the team and similar.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section i_icon_fontawesome=”fa fa-user-plus” add_icon=”true” title=”Beitrag” tab_id=”contribution5bd8-7518″][vc_column_text]

Volunteers are needed as those wanting to develop their veterinary or animal care skills to those wanting to work with children in the education. Perhaps as a volunteer with other strengths and experiences you want to help in developing the project marketing, website and social media or simply you want to do a bit of everything! Volunteers always have something to offer and on the other hand, they gain from the volunteering itself. As a volunteer you will have the opportunity to help in Community Veterinary Services, where the project delivers essential veterinary care free of charge in lower income communities for the animals. The other opportunity is in the Livestock Project. The AWE project is involved in the control of the killer tick-borne disease called in partnership with the Veterinary Department, Africa Union and other alliances for Livestock Medicines. Definitely the work of each volunteer will not be only as a valuable experience but also as an lifelong memorable adventure.
Typical Day:
Your work day will start at 8:00 am and usually end at around 5:00 pm. Volunteers generally work 6 days a week. Sundays are free and will offer you the other side of the volunteer adventure joys. You might book some activities in advance.
